Police report to Action Fraud to save time

On April 1 the City of London Police becomes the first UK force to start referring victims of fraud directly to Action Fraud.

If successful the three-month pilot will lead to a national roll out of the process across other police forces.

As long as the victim is not vulnerable, there is no need for immediate police action or there aren’t any known suspects, officers can advise them to report the crime to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040 or using the website: www.actionfraud.org.uk/report.fraud

If they agree, there is nothing to record, providing more time for other duties.

If the victim does not want to report direct to Action Fraud the officer will complete the online report on their behalf.

The new process will see NFIB category fraud crime recorded and counted at the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau, and not on the central Unifi system. This should save many hours of staff time recording fraud crime.

The Deputy Director of the NFIB, T/DCI Richard Waight, said:

“By launching this pilot the force continues to lead the way in developing the most effective and efficient way to record and analyse reports of fraud.

“This new initiative should enable officers to focus more on dealing with the vulnerable people who we find to be so often exploited by fraudsters across the country.”

Full information will soon be available on Citynet and posters and leaflets will be supplied to all front offices, the CAD/Control room and FCCIB.

SOCA welcomes the NFIB - for the first time we will have a comprehensive intelligence picture and understanding of the full scale of fraud in the United Kingdom. This will enable a co-ordinated and appropriate law enforcement response and create a hostile environment for fraudsters. Sharon Lemon, Deputy Director Head of High Tech Crime at SOCA
