NFIB help MPS deliver lengthy sentence

NFIB works with MPS to deliver longer sentence for criminal gang

NFIB intelligence has helped the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) secure lengthy prison sentences for a gang of forgers supplying criminal networks with false identity documents.

Back in March, following a four month investigation, officers arrested three men and searched several properties across East London

Equipment and machinery used to produce counterfeit identity documents was seized, with detectives finding evidence of Lithuanian ID cards and driving licenses being manufactured to order at £250 a document.

The MPS asked the Bureau to use this evidence to find out if the gang were linked to a broader network providing fraud documents across the country.

NFIB checks identified 46 fraud networks impacting police forces across the UK, split between 23 addresses and 23 individuals.

This intelligence enabled the prosecution to prove how the fraudsters were operating as part of an organised crime group and persuaded the judge to give the men an extended sentence totalling 16 years.

The criminals had previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to manufacture identity documents.

The Technical Coordinator for the NFIB, Detective Inspector Steve Strickland, said:

“On the surface these men appeared to be low level fraudsters but in reality they were operating within a wider criminal network.

“I am delighted the NFIB has helped the MPS secure sentences these three men fully deserve, and I would urge other forces to look to the Bureau for support in cases of this type.”

SOCA welcomes the NFIB - for the first time we will have a comprehensive intelligence picture and understanding of the full scale of fraud in the United Kingdom. This will enable a co-ordinated and appropriate law enforcement response and create a hostile environment for fraudsters. Sharon Lemon, Deputy Director Head of High Tech Crime at SOCA
