Coalition government visit NFIB

National Fraud Intelligence Bureau

Attorney General and Solicitor General see the NFIB in action

Senior members of the new Coalition Government came to the City of London Police on Monday to hear about the groundbreaking work of the NFIB and National Lead Force.

The Attorney General, the Rt Hon Dominic Grieve QC MP, and the Solicitor General, Edward Garnier QC MP, were welcomed to the City by the Commissioner and the Chairman of the Police Committee.

The Ministers saw how the NFIB is already having an impact on national efforts to combat fraud, including a demonstration of the advanced criminal networks that will help police forces around the country track down serial fraudsters.

The AG and SG were also talked through Operation Soundwave – an ongoing 25 million pound boiler room fraud investigation.

DCI Dave Clark explained how the NFIB and National Lead Force, working in tandem with Northumbria Police, GMP and Swedish and Spanish authorities, had swiftly led to a number of criminal charges.

The visit ended with a tour of the NFIB, giving the Ministers the chance to meet members of the team.

Speaking after the tour, the Attorney and Solicitor praised the work of the NFIB and the levels of commitment demonstrated by staff.

The Attorney General said:

“It is really encouraging to see what the NFIB is doing to combat fraud. Our visit has given us a much fuller picture of how the NFIB is being deployed to tackle a highly damaging crime.”

DCS Steve Head said:

“With the Government making significant cuts to public spending it is vitally important for us to demonstrate the value for money the NFIB will deliver.

“I was very pleased to see how positive the Attorney and Solicitor were about the NFIB, and, as always, very impressed at the level of expertise on display from the team.”

SOCA welcomes the NFIB - for the first time we will have a comprehensive intelligence picture and understanding of the full scale of fraud in the United Kingdom. This will enable a co-ordinated and appropriate law enforcement response and create a hostile environment for fraudsters. Sharon Lemon, Deputy Director Head of High Tech Crime at SOCA
