Australian police open their doors to the NFIB

The Commander of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) came to the City of London Police to sign a landmark intelligence sharing agreement.

The deal will enable the NFIB to access fraud data stored thousands of miles away to identify serial fraudsters offending in different parts of the world.

The City of London Police has always enjoyed a close relationship with the AFP and this initiative to share data more easily and more regularly was established when ECD detectives were invited to Australia to pass on their experience and intelligence in combatting Tamil Organised Crime Groups operating between the UK, Australia and the Indian sub continent.

As a result of this relationship and previous operational successes, the AFP began working with the NFIB at its launch last year, and the MOU is confirmation of this partnership and evidence of how the City of London Police and AFP are dedicated to fighting international fraudsters.

Head of Economic Crime at the City of London Police, Det Ch Supt Steve Head, said:

"Time and again we find UK citizens falling victim to major frauds being masterminded by criminal networks that stretch far beyond our shores.

“This agreement with the Australian Federal Police gives the National Lead Force access to intelligence that could ultimately lead law enforcement to the doorsteps of fraudsters operating both north and south of the equator. It also shows, once again, how the City of London Police's work in fighting fraud is recognised and respected around the world.”

SOCA welcomes the NFIB - for the first time we will have a comprehensive intelligence picture and understanding of the full scale of fraud in the United Kingdom. This will enable a co-ordinated and appropriate law enforcement response and create a hostile environment for fraudsters. Sharon Lemon, Deputy Director Head of High Tech Crime at SOCA
